Tokyo - Day 9 Riding around Tokyo - Sony Building

14th September Day 9 – Riding around Tokyo, checking out the Sony Building in Ginza and visiting the shopping streets in Ueno.

Friday was another early wake up as Locky as he had to go to school so I woke up early as well to leave his flat with him. Today my plan was to do some more bike riding around Tokyo! Its so much fun riding around in Tokyo, you get to see so much of the city, and because its so flat its quite an easy ride as you can push yourself as much or as little as you want.

My legs are still aching from Mt. Fuji so its nice to jump on a bike to ride away the pain and soreness. So I had already tried to visit the Sony Building once before but it was closed, so this was my second attempt, it was pretty easy to find as I have this new app for my phone that downloads offline maps to your phone and then uses the GPS built into the phone to track your location! It’s actually really handy!

So I eventually found the Sony Building that was a fair ride from Locky’s place maybe an hour away. But like I said before it’s nice riding around Tokyo.

I locked my bike up with the thinnest bike lock I had ever seen, just praying that my bike wouldn’t get nicked as I spend time checking out all the gadgets in the Sony Building.

I explored the many floors of the Sony building, everything from the gaming section to the music section to the TV’s and cameras. I touched, used and tried everything! It was so much fun, I could have spent (if I had the money) hundreds of thousands of dollars on EVERYTHING.

A couple of the big highlights for me, were trying on the headphones. So my first pair I tried on were over $200AUD which were some really nice Sony over the ear headphones and I listened to my own music. I found the bassiest track I could find a rocked out! Whilst I was rocking out (on my own) I looked over to my left and realised that there was an even more expensive pair, with an amplifier that you plug your iPhone into to increase the sound quality.

I finished the song I was listening to and tried the new setup. Ok, so the headphones themselves cost 49,800YEN ($612AUD) and then the small iPhone Amplifier is 39,800YEN ($489AUD) so the whole setup cost $1.101AUD, and it sounded awesome! I just wish I could have bought them and taken them home to listen! It was great!

After I had my head blown off by some of the most amazing audiophile equipment I have ever tried I headed up to the Camera equipment and took some photos of the little model train sets that they have located near the Camera kit. It was fun! But again I couldn’t afford any of it.

Next up was the TV and Entertainment centre. I was just walking around this building with a huge smile on my face and shaking my head in just astonishment, I got chatting with on the Japanese girls that work there and I explained to her how great this was. She pointed me upstairs to the next room that featured the latest in 3D entertainment, the Sony Headset/Goggles!

I waited in line for 15 minutes playing with the cool Sony Phones and Tablets until I was called into this room, where there were 4 stations and a really comfy leather chair next to each station. On each station there was a Sony Headset and a pair of the $612AUD headphones!

So you sit down in this chair and a Japanese girl explains to you in Japanese how to adjust the headset to fit your head, clearly myself and the other American guy in the room had no idea what was happening. We managed with a little bit of help from the ladies, put the headphone on and watched the trailer for the new Spiderman in 3D! I’ve seen the movie, but in 3D it looked AMAZING!

I came out of that room once again just giggling in excitement thinking that one day, this will be normal!
At the moment, I think the Headset was a bit to bulky and heavy, and that after 30 minutes of watching you will get a sore neck… but this is only the beginning!
After the amazing 3D experience, I went up another set of stairs and watched This Is It, the Michael Jackson movie on a huge TV with great speakers.
Once I had had enough and go to depressed to continue I went to the toilet and got my bum washed and dried using the special toilets and then headed back outside to find my bike in exactly the same place I’d left it.

I jumped back on my Pink bike a travelled to  to just check out another small suburb in Tokyo. There was lots going on, people everywhere, lots of markets it was really great. I was looking for some special Japanese 2 toe’d shoes called Tobi, I found a pair but they were 3,000Yen and I was sure I could find some cheaper.

Anyway, it was getting late, so I road my bike back to Shinjuku to meet Locky and his Japanese girlfriend so we could head back to their flat together.

It was a great evening, Locky and his Girlfriend cooked some great Okanamiyaki which filled me up and let me pass out with food sleeps! Perfect.

TL;DR – Checked out all the gadgets in the Sony Building, and had some amazing food!

The Imperial Palace in Tokyo, it was closed so i couldnt go in, instead i took this photo!

One of the many Japanese Parks!

Who would of thought there was a Hooters in Tokyo, Ginza!

Lithuania! Vilnius, Trakai and Siaulai

23/8/12

2257 (localtime)

Vilnius, Trakai and Siaulai, Lithuania

Written in: Riga, Lativa – in my dorm room.

Howdy all, another update coming your way and it concerning Lithuania! When I was in high school I never ever imagined myself going to Lithuania, its really funny how you predict life to go, but actually you have no idea what’s going to happen in the next 5 years… sometimes its nice to take life as it comes. Have no expectations and you will have no disappointment… Probably not the best way to tackle life in a professional sense… but for a travelling sense, its not so bad!

Ok, so lets talk a little bit about Lithuania!

I arrived to Lithuania from Warsaw, Poland on the 20th of August. I had to wake up so early to catch this bus that was leaving at 605 in the morning! Meaning that I set my alarm for 5am – washed my face with a little bit of water, and had some breakfast. I started walking to the bus station with plenty of time, but I couldn’t find the place where the bus was leaving. People kept on telling me different places where the station was. I eventually found the bus station with 7 minutes to spare, showed the guy my ticket and was set!

I was trying to sleep on the bus but to no avail instead I watched Blade! Wesley Snipes is so bad ass in that film!

I eventually arrive at Vilnius by 3pm (ish) and with the clocks going forward 1 hour due to timezones it wasn’t that bad of a journey. I quickly found my hostel checked in and went wandering around the city.
The city itself isn’t all that bad, there are plenty of street signs pointing you in the right direction its quite  a fun city to explore. I walked past pretty buildings and even climbed to the top of a old castle. I was full of energy from sitting on a bus all day that I walked until it was dark.

The Lithuanian guys are friendly too, I got chatty with a local skateboarder about skating, he was telling me that he has worked all summer, getting paid hardly anything so he could afford to go to London to go skating! His English wasn’t bad, so I was trying to explain to him that he should try and find a job in London somewhere so he can stay a bit longer… maybe he listened, maybe not… either way its nice to hear a young dude saving his money to do something he wants to do!

I also wandered into a local music store, where I checked out his old LP’s, he had some absolute classics in there… I could have spent a fortune, everything from – Creedence Clearwater, to Bob Marley! It s awesome.

Anyway, I took my photos and headed home before it got too dark.
Back at my hostel, I got chatty with an English guy called Barney, anyway we were talking about going for a day trip to Trakai, which is about an hour away from Vilnius. Perfect, looks like I had company for my day trip.
So we got up pretty early and caught the bus to Trakai and 1 hour later we were there.

We walked around the little village, one of the main sights to see if the old/very much refurbished castle, that is situated on the lake. It’s quite a nice looking place, the lake itself has several islands scatted all over the place, it would have been really nice to go for a Stand Up Paddle board.

Me and Barney tried to find out more about the Karaims or Karaites, who are a religious group of people from Trakai who, to my understanding believe in Christanity and Islam and a bunch of other religions, it would have been interesting to find out more but the museum was closed. Google It…

We walked all around the city all day. I even tried some Krass (I think that’s how its spelt) which is a type of cider…? Which is quite commonly drunk in the Baltic states. Its quite cool, just served off the street in a big vat, normally surrounded by aggressive wasps and bees… GREAT!

When we got back, we just chilled out as tomorrow we were getting up really early so we could go and spend a day in Siaulai.

The plan was too catch the 6.30am bus for 3 hours to Siaulai to see the ‘hill of crosses’. I got up at 5.45am and had a quick breakfast, woke up Barney and headed to the bus station with all of our stuff.
From Siaulai I was going to head to Riga and Barney to the Caranatian Spit, in western Lithuania. When we got to the bus station, we dumped our bags in a baggage storage place, found out the required information about bus times and what not, and then headed to the information centre because we wanted to rent some bikes to ride to the Hill of Crosses which is 10km out of town.

We grabbed some food before the trip and started our ride to the hill of crosses, by 30 minutes we were there.

The Hill of Crosses is like a small hill, where hundreds and thousands Christians come every year to place  crosses in the hill, either for a family member that has passed away or even just to mark a place… its very weird and I imagine at night time it would be pretty haunting!
Check out the photos, it’s a very photogenic place.

Ok, so we road back home and wandered around the city until our buses arrive. I was told that you can just buy a ticket on the bus to get to Riga, so when the bus… no not a bus more of a Ford Transit arrived I knew I was going to be in trouble, as the bus was completely full… Lucky for me a Chinese couple were in the same situation as me.

A taxi driver arrived after he noticed that not everyone was going to fit on the bus and he stated his fee of 240 litai, for 3 people which is about 23 euros each… almost 10 euros more expensive than the bus… what this taxi driver didn’t realise is that I have come from Egypt where bargaining is a skill – I persisted and got the taxi driver down to 150 litai, which is only 15 euros each! PERFECT!

The taxi ride itself was very boring, I fell asleep for most of it.

Eventually we arrived into Riga – I said my goodbyes to the Chinese couple and found my hostel…

I was in Riga!
Till next time

Amsterdam - Coffee Shops, Sex Museums and Bikes!

2/6/12

1942 (local time)

Leer (Ostfriesl) Bus Station #Friggin’ Cold

How badly can one man stack his connections that he has turned a 5 hour train ride into a 9 hour and 5 different stop-over’s using both Train’s and Buses. Yep, I can!

A hung over Steve got on the bus from Amsterdam, got mega confused about where I was, so got off a stop to early leaving him stranded in some random city trying to pick up the pieces from there.
Never mind though, let’s not take away from the most amazing time I had in Amsterdam.

I was greeted at the Amsterdam Central bus-station by Arrianne, she was pretty easy to spot with her platinum blonde hair, and I’m pretty sure I was just as easy to find as I feel as if my backpack is crushing my entire spine.

I took a tram back to her flat whilst she peddled her old sketchy push bike with no breaks and still managed to beat the tram back.

We went out for beers as soon as we got in, and I could see that I was going to enjoy my time here! The canals that run through the city make it look beautiful at night that no lens would be able to capture.
It was bizarre, everywhere I went on first impressions I felt intimated, not because I felt any anger upon me, but everyone is just really really tall. I don’t claim to be a short guy, I’m hitting a vertical peak at about 178cm, whilst every male (and female) is 6ft and beyond!

Anyway, so Arrianne felt obliged to take me around the city and do at least some of the touristy stuff, so I hired a red bike for the day and we set off. Riding past Anne Franks house was pretty cool, didn’t go in because there was a queue that went almost went around the entire block. So I snapped a quick photo, and we set back off again.

-Warning-
If you don’t like the idea of your son/friend/grandson/cousin/nephew engaging in illegal drugs then skip the next paragraph.

Next up was a Coffee shop, we found a little laneway that had a cosy Coffee shop and got comfy and baked. I’ve done some smoking in Egypt, but the stuff there does not even come close to the strength of the stuff in Amsterdam.

I got pretty wrecked, but once I pulled myself together we got back on our bikes and headed down to the Sex Museum.

So by the time we got to the Museum we were still pretty baked, and for anyone that has tried Marijuana you know about the different stages you go through with the drug. Fortunately by the time we got to the Sex Museum, we both had the giggles. The things they have at this Museum was borderline cringe-worthy but was definitely a great laugh. After getting lost, we finally saw daylight and went on another bike ride.

If you have never been to Amsterdam, you would have heard that they just ride their bikes everywhere. When I heard this I was like, that’s cool, few bikes on the road… no dramas. But, when you get there… everyone is on a bike. Kids, Adults, Fat People etc, and if you can’t ride a bike there are people you can pay to ride you around… So for the heads up, before you cross the road… look both way for bikes!
When we started our tour, I asked Arrianne if she has ever crashed…
“No Steve, I never crash” she replied.

Just as she said this, a old dude rides straight into the back of her… I was amused by the old guy certainly wasn’t.

Then, only last night as we were riding Arrianne’s bike to the next pub she got shouted at by another Lady in her mid-50’s because apparently Arrianne accidently kicked her side bag as she hopped onto the bike. So in the period of 2 days, Arrianne went from having a clean sheet, to causing 2 accidents… Good Work!
Right, back to the tour after visiting the Sex Museum we cruised around checking out all different parts of the city: Red Light District, a house where squatters took ownership of a house.

It was the nights that I enjoyed the most, we stayed out of the touristy bars, so I got a real feel of Amsterdam culture. There is defiantly a divide between people though, like in sports you have Windsurfers v. Kitesurfers, Skateboarders v. Rollerbladers/BMX’s, Snowboarding v. Skiers. In Amsterdam you have the Non-Collared v. Collared bars. (I’m referring to guy’s shirts.)
Had some great nights out, meeting loads of different people and potentially ruining any chances of them coming to Australia J.

Anyway, my fingers feel as if they are about to freeze off so I will sign off here.

Take care and remember let the force be with you!

Cheers Skin-Up-Ski & Dirk Diggler! Xx

Arrianne hangin out in front of Anne Franks house!
